With the onslaught of a recent heat wave that has been devouring our fair city, we need to continue to think about the impact of summer exhibitions and the idea of a gallery that transforms into a cool respite for commoners off the street. As mentioned in last week's post, the ban on media equipment from exhibitions is probably most important when considering your visitors' best interests. Without visitors and art enthusiasts, the artist becomes meaningless, so for this hot summer you'll want to shift your gallery's mission to be most concerned with the visitor.

In order to appease the common street goer, a gallerist needs to bring the artworks out from in. Build a wall over the sidewalk to display your artists' works. Make a statement with a custom trellis over your entryway that has shelves to hold your ceramicists' wares. Make the people want to come in. Give them some enticing eye candy to pull them in to your cool, climate-controlled haven. Although economical, a glass window just doesn't have the same effect.

Put a pedestal out, use some security screws to tie down that old metal house you've been keeping in archives for years - the rain will only make it better. Be resourceful and always remember to appease your consumers.

  8. Hey, general question to the readership: does my having a middle name (“AM”) make me look pretentious, or Spanish?

    Or does it just make my ass look fat?

  13. On artblahg quoting CVF:

    artblag => art criticism
    gore => internet

    Except that gore’s claim is actually true :)

    By the way, if CVF ever looks at artblahg, he’s gonna laugh his ass off.

  16. http://www.villagevoice.com/2010-06-01/art/ps-1-s-greater-new-york-2010/

    artblahg quoted him as an example of why Philly youth culture sucks, I guess in an attempt to elevate his own muddy thinking by association and set up a corollary between very different things - the Greater New York show, which has its own particular history at PS1, and, um, all of Philly. The school of “I am what I quote” doesn’t amount to much without some cogent thinking around it.

    One of artblahg’s pet groups, the Bruce High Quality Foundation, is one of the exhibiting artists. So does the show suck because CVF pans it? Or is it awesome, because BHQF is in it? Is it a show artblahg even saw?

    Whatever. It IS a piece worth reading, but anybody who reads any art blogs at all will have already read it. I can quote too, and this one’s my favorite:

    "Works like these only really make sense inside an MFA program. Before the crit.”

  17. Vince doesn't know his ass from his elbow. He could have just as easily chosen quotes from Sonny Bono, Lucy Lippard, Hitler or Bob Ross to illustrate his point. His point being, 'I will go after anyone who I perceive as having wronged me with vicious, yet nonsensical, words and today it's 'Philly youth culture.'

    Romaniello has his head up his ass. Which, as I mentioned, he doesn't know from his elbow.

    Honestly, I thought the review was unbearably pretentious. I Am Anon, can you start writing some good shit here in Philadelphia for us all to read? Actually, maybe you already do and I don't know it. But if you don't, I know I would be interested to hear what you have to say about art, and the art world. Seriously.
